How to look like Holly Golightly

She survived in her furniture-less apartment by taking $50 tips everytime she needed to powder her nose, but still we all want to be Holly Golightly. Here, makeup maestro Kate O’Reilly shows us how to channel our inner Holly by painting her onto our face.

Audrey Hepburn is an icon of effortless chic. She has none of the glossy red lips or frosted white eyeshadow of more obvious 50’s bombshells like Marilyn Monroe or Jane Mansfeild. Audrey’s is a more understated glamour. Here is the best way to achieve her look.
  1. Skin should be natural and glowing. Not too shimmery, not too matte. Try Chanel Vitaluminere foundation in a shade that matches your skin tone exactly.
  2. Give cheeks a flushed glow with a soft pink cream blush. Try Bobbi Brown Blushed Rose.
  3. Highlight undereye circles with makeup artists favorite; Givency Mister Bright.
  4. Finish your glowing skin with a light wash of powder such as Laura Mercier Finishing Powder.
  5. Define brows in a strong arch using eyeshadow or pencil.
  6. Apply a matte slate grey eyeshadow along your lash line and blend upwards. Don’t go higher than your sockets.
  7. For a night time Holly look, add some black liquid liner. Go for an angular flick that exagerates your lashes.
  8. False lahes will give that extra umph. Eyelure have redesigned their Girl’s Aloud range  and Cheryl’s new style is just perfect!
  9. Throughout the film, Holly appears in a variety or coral coloured lipsticks. You can go coral red, coral pink or true coral depending on your mood! Keep it pale and not too vibrant.
  10. If you’re feeling REALLY brave, why not dye a small streak of hair blonde and chop a rediculously short fringe! Ah go on, you’ll look like  Holly!

The Suits

George Peppard to many is best known as Colonel John "Hannibal" smith, the cigar-chomping leader of a renegade commando squad The A Team from the 1980s television show. But his most famous role was as Paul Varjac, Holly Golightly's long-suffering neighbor in Breakfast at Tiffany's. Peppard's good looks and gentlemanly manner helped him to hold his own beside the divine Miss Hepburn. Although everyone talks Audrey's wardrobe, Peppard also slicked around New York in some incredibly suave ensembles. From the late 1950s to the early '60s, longer and wider cuts started to disappear and a more refined and slimmer look appeared. For inspiration, think Mad Men and Cart Grant wearing that suit in North by North West. It's an incredibly sharp flattering look and very popular at the moment. Zara, Topshop and River Island all have similar suits. Catch the end of the sales before it's too late.
Peppard is perfectly attired for Holly's distinguished parties. He wears a slim blue suit and skinny tie with a simple white folded handkerchief in his pocket.
Outshining Audrey in a beautifully-cut grey suit.
Looking casual in a shirt and trousers but the devils in the details. Everything is freshly pressed, with rolled up sleeves and a tucked in waist making him look smart casual. Most importantly check out the hair.

Perfectly preppy in a navy blazzer and grey trousers combo. The navy and burgundy-striped tie and matching handkerchief give it a very "Harvard Business School" look. Silly mask optional.
Even preppier in a cardigan and wool coat combo.
No one wears a mac like Bogey, but Peppard comes a close second. Practical and fashionable, every man should have a mac.

The Dress

In the early morning an elegant Holly Golightly emerges from a new york taxi wearing a sleeveless, black satin, floor-length Givenchy cocktail gown. She eats a pastry, drinks her coffee and gazes dreamingly through the window  of Fifth Avenue's Tiffany & Co, fashion history is made.
In Breakfast at Tiffany'd Audrey Hepburn wears what would become perhaps the most famous little black dress of all time. A dress that  Christie's auction house sold  for over $1 million dollars in 2006.  Christie's describes it as "An evening gown of black Italian satin designed by Hubert de Givenchy for Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly in the 1961 Paramount film Breakfast At Tiffany's, the sleeveless, floor-length gown with fitted bodice embellished at the back with distinctive cut-out décolleté, the skirt slightly gathered at the waist and slit to the thigh on one side, labelled inside on the waistband Givenchy".
Hepburn first met Givenchy in 1953, when the Belgian-born actress described herself as "a skinny little nobody". They successfully collaborated in Sabrina in 1954 and Funny Face in 1957, but Breakfast at Tiffany’s would prove to be their style masterpiece which would re-define Hollywood chic.

Many of us will be emulating the wonderful Holly Golightly for Film Fatales first birthday celebrations.  Unfortunately the dress is so exquisite that nothing comes nearly as close but we'll still make a damn fine attempt. To me the most important detail of dress is the high, straight neckline,  the neckline at the front is incredibly chic and a timeless style that you should be able to find in afternoon of shopping. If you can't handle an afternoon of shopping, this beautiful silk Oasis dress(only €25 in the sales) has a great cut with a similar neckline and nipped in waist .

The only draw back is that it isn't full length but it's very difficult to find a floor length well cut dress without breaking the bank. However, if you find a floor length black dress and it's not the right cut, you can easily nip the waist in with some stitches but be warned it may only last the night.  The dress that Swop Shop used for their icons collection photoshoot was actually a straight cut which they nipped in for the photo shoot and it looks amazing.
If your all about the back there's a floor length costume with a similar back but be wary with costumes as the cut and material may not be amazing but it's Film Fatale not fashion week so the most important thing is that you feel comfortable and glamorous. There's not enough opportunities to put on your glad rags, so lets go all out. xXx
